What one person calls rude, another might call direct.

Living in the United States as an Australian, I’ve noticed how differently friendliness is expressed from state to state — and how easily behaviour can be misread without context.

In this episode, I look at survey data and common perceptions around “rude” states, and explore what might sit beneath those reputations.

We’ll consider:

• How regional communication styles vary
 • The difference between efficiency and warmth
 • Why certain places develop strong reputations
 • And how culture shapes what we interpret as polite or impolite

This isn’t about criticising entire states.

It’s about how expectations travel with us — and how quickly we label behaviour when it doesn’t match what we’re used to.

Sometimes what feels blunt in one region feels refreshingly honest in another.

And that contrast is often more interesting than the ranking itself.
